Autism and the Law Series

Navigating the hundreds of pages of legalese that mandate education and health-care benefits for children with ASD can be overwhelming. These sessions simplify that process. They cover the legal rights and options that parents, advocates, and medical and therapy providers must know to ensure that children with ASD receive the benefits they deserve. Presented by experts in special education and health law, these series provide information on state and federal laws regulating private insurance, Medicaid, special education, and more.
Open to parents, medical and therapy providers, educators, and other advocates, and are presented regularly throughout Washington.

Blueprints to Special Education

Join Washington Autism Alliance & Advocacy for an in-depth explanation on how to use the building blocks of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to develop appropriate services for your child or student.

Autism and Insurance - Maximizing Benefits

Most WA insurers are now required to cover treatments for Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and neurodevelopmental therapies. Successful adoption and implementation of these requirements requires close collaboration among parents, behavior analysts and other healthcare professionals. This workshop will focus on how to ensure therapies are covered.

Understanding Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Parents of children newly diagnosed with ASD can be frustrated by the wait to get treatment. During this critical period, they want to know what they can do to help their child. These free workshops, presented by WAAA and area Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) bridge that gap. They teach parents some of the basic Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles to help them work with their child while they wait to secure ABA services.

Understanding ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behavior.

“I am so excited and grateful to be joining you this year as the facilitator of the Washington Autism Alliance and Advocacy’s Supporting Parents of Autism (SPA) support group.
As in many of the previous groups that I have facilitated, my vision for this group is to be a place of trust, support, and empowerment. I hope this group will become a place where parents will come together to support each other in their parenting struggles, challenges, joys, and successes.
You are the expert in your children and you have so much knowledge and experience to share with others. My role is to facilitate and create a space where sharing is welcome and encouraged.
Our first few groups will primarily focus on getting to know one another and developing a space where people feel comfortable sharing their stories. Please feel free to come with suggestions and ideas for group topics and conversations that you would like to cover in our time together, as I want this process to be dynamic and inclusive for everyone.”
